The aim of hospice care is to improve the lives of people who have an incurable illness. Hospices provide care for people from the point at which their illness is diagnosed as terminal to the end of their life, however long that may be.

What does hospice care cover?

The services that hospices offer vary, but most offer medical and nursing care, including managing pain and other symptoms. They might also offer:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Complementary therapies, such as massage
  • Rehabilitation - helping you remain independent through things like physiotherapy
  • Respite care - looking after you so your carers can have a break from caring for a short while
  • Information about coping financially
  • Bereavement care
  • Spiritual and psychological help

Some of the services and care that a hospice can provide include:

  • Day hospice - 12-week therapeutic programmes; you will go to a day hospice or 'Living Well Centre' once a week and meet others in a similar situation. Together, you will learn how to cope with symptoms, take part in therapeutic activities and set realistic goals around what is important to you.
  • Hospice at home - If you choose to be at home for your final days, hospices work alongside your GP and district nurses to make sure you are as comfortable as you can be. This may involve daily visits, helping your loved ones to know what to look out for, and reducing any symptoms you may have.
  • Inpatient units - Nurses and doctors will talk with you to find out more about your illness, your concerns and what is most important to you. This enables an individualised plan to be created for your care and provide you with the best treatment.
  • Outpatient clinic - This weekly service is run by a Palliative Medical Consultant and Clinical Nurse Specialist. If you wish to attend the clinic, you will need to be well enough to attend as an outpatient.
