Mr Ian Sharp, Interim Chief Medical Officer
In September 2025, Mr Ian Sharp was appointed as Interim Chief Medical Officer of NHS Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board (ICB), providing clinical leadership for Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System.
Mr Ian Sharp is a Consultant Cleft and Maxillofacial Surgeon, currently serving at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
His work focuses on complex reconstructive procedures, particularly for children born with cleft conditions, and he plays a pivotal role in multidisciplinary care pathways that support patients and families throughout their treatment journey.
In addition to his surgical work, Mr Sharp has also been involved in elective care planning at UHB in his role as Divisional Medical Director. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as the Clinical Lead for Elective Care, overseeing the NHS use of independent sector providers during the pandemic and into recovery. He was also instrumental in coordinating regional responses and staffing strategies for potential surges in acute care demand. Since the pandemic, Mr Sharp has worked with NHS Birmingham and Solihull ICB, to lead elective care recovery as Senior Responsible Officer.
Outside of clinical care and healthcare leadership, Mr Sharp maintains an interest in education and training. He is an Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean for Core & Specialty Training at NHS England, as well as being a member of the Surgical Teaching Faculty for the AO Surgical Training Organisation and Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialty Advisory Committee at the Royal College of Surgeons.
The chance to have an impact on the wider health system is what brought Mr Sharp to the ICB. As Interim Chief Medical Officer, Mr Sharp is looking forward to the challenge and opportunity afforded by the re-development of the ICB landscape, with a focus on improving the health of our population through collaborative working across the system.
