Staff and volunteers are being urged to participate in an innovative initiative aimed at making health and care the best place to work in Birmingham and Solihull.
Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System launched ‘Our Open Conversations’ in November last year, providing staff and volunteers across the NHS, Local Authorities, and the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector an opportunity to share their views.
Over 1,600 staff and volunteers logged onto the online Conversation platform and together they anonymously discussed the System’s culture. Their ideas and views have now been independently analysed and used to create a number of draft pledges that will sit at the heart of a ‘new deal’ for staff and volunteers.
Now staff and volunteers are being invited to participate in a second Conversation, taking place between 23 April to 7 May 2024, in which they have the opportunity to discuss the draft pledges before they are finalised.
David Melbourne, Chief Executive Officer of NHS Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board, said: "We are determined to make working in health and care in Birmingham and Solihull the best place it can be.
“We can only do this by having a two-way conversation so that we can make genuinely transformative change.
“This second Conversation will directly impact the final pledges and shape the future of our health and care system.
“The final pledges will represent a collective commitment to each other to help make every part of health and care in Birmingham and Solihull the best place to work.
“I would urge all staff and volunteers to get involved; their participation in this Conversation is essential to ensure we are making the right changes and are committed to the right goals.”
The Conversation is:

• For all staff and volunteers working in health and care across Birmingham and Solihull
• Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while the Conversation is live
• Accessible on any device
• Analysed independently
Staff at NHS Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, will receive an email with their unique login details and a link to access the Conversation platform when the Conversation launches.
Staff at Primary Care providers, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, Birmingham City Council, including independent adult social care providers, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, and the VCFSE Sector can visit openconversations.clevertogether.com before and during the Conversation to register by clicking the ‘sign up’ button.
Once the second Conversation has taken place, staff and volunteers’ views will be analysed to finalise the draft pledges, which will be rolled out across Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System in Autumn 2024.
