Dr Clara Day, Chief Medical Officer

Clara_Day.jpgAfter graduating from University of Oxford with a degree in medicine, Clara Day trained as a junior in general medicine at the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals, before training in renal medicine as a specialist registrar across the West Midlands. During this time she also completed a PhD at the University of Birmingham, studying renal immunology.

Clara joined University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) as a consultant nephrologist in June 2008, and she developed clinical interests in home haemodialysis and renal disease in pregnancy.

At UHB, Clara ran the haemodialysis programme, which is the largest in the UK. Managing the programme led Clara to assume the role of UHB’s Assistant Medical Director for Finance.

In 2015, while working at UHB, Clara took on a role within NHS England as Clinical Director of the West Midlands Renal Network, overseeing a peer review programme.  In 2016 Clara became a member of NHS England Renal Clinical Reference Group, before becoming Chair in 2019.

In October 2020 Clara was named the Medical Director for the COVID-19 vaccination programme, and in November 2021 Clara became the Interim Clinical Lead for Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System (ICS).

In May 2022, Clara was appointed as the Chief Medical Officer of the NHS Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board (ICB), which forms part of the Birmingham and Solihull ICS.

In her new role, Clara will ensure high quality and equitable patient care is delivered by collaborative system partners whilst also supporting the system’s goals of enhancing productivity and value for money.
