What is shared decision making? Shared decision making makes sure you are supported to make decisions that are right for you. It is a collaborative process where a clinician, such as a GP or hospital consultant, supports a patient to reach a decision about their treatment.

A shared decision making conversation brings together:

  • The clinician’s expertise, such as treatment options, evidence, risks and benefits.
  • What the patient knows best, such as their preferences, personal circumstances, goals, values and beliefs.

Help us to improve shared decision making in Birmingham and Solihull.

You have invaluable knowledge of accessing and using local NHS services and we want to work with you to produce a local campaign to prepare patients and the public for shared decision making conversations.

We’re looking to work with a diverse group of people, aged 18 and above, with different experiences of healthcare services, whether you have a long-term condition or just an interest in health services.

This is an exciting opportunity to improve the experience of receiving healthcare in Birmingham and Solihull. In exchange for your commitment to this programme of work, you will get:

  • Support to undertake NHS England’s Peer Leadership Development Programme. You can learn about the course here.
  • £10 an hour for any project work you undertake.
  • Opportunities to meet and connect with others.
  • Opportunities to take part in other co-production work across health and care services in Birmingham and Solihull.
